<span>Medicinal plants; the world's oldest known health care products, play dominant role in traditional health medicine. Simultaneously, plants are one of the driving forces that play a key role in the development and advancement of modern studies on biological activities. This volume contains 24 chapters contributed from 16 far and east countries namely Austria, China, Czech Republic, India, Iran, Japan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Mauritius, Nigeria, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey and USA. The volume reflects at various pharmacological properties, their mechanism of action and medical preparations used in disease management like cancer, diabetes, rheumatic diseases, Alzheimer's disease, hepatoprotective, dental caries, depression and anxiety cognitive disorder, erectile dysfunction and infertility, and other health promoting properties. The volume also contains comprehensive review of significant bioactive compounds like polysaccharides, polyphenols, phenylethanoids, glycosides, genistein, silybin etc. New findings from the study of saffron (Crocus sativus) indicate a decrease of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. The protective benefits from several dietary compounds have been demonstrated against cancer, oxidative stress, inflammation and cardiovascular disorders and the physiological relevance as well as the molecular mechanisms involved in these effects are also discussed. One of the article describes the application of natural products in order to protect crops, fruits and vegetables against contamination with phytopathogenic and saprophytic fungi. Medicinal herbs namely linden (Titlia cordata), peppermint (Mentha piperita), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), sage (Salvia officinalis) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris) were investigated in terms of their health-promoting properties and related bioactive constituents. Significantly, the use of natural immunostimulants in fish culture is a promising new development. This volume is aimed for professionals of interdisciplinary health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacognosy, agriculture, botany, medicine, therapeutics, traditional medicine, complementary and alternative medicine, food technology, herbalism, medical and public health sciences, policy-makers and marketing and economic strategies. It is addressed to undergraduate, postgraduate, teachers and researchers. </span>
<span>J.N. Govil (B. 1945): Obtained his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from Agra University, Agra, India. In his career span of 41 years research experience at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, Dr. Govil has been involved in the breeding of cross-pollinated, often cross-pollinated, and self-pollinated crops. His research was mainly focused on breeding for better quality, disease resistance, and for higher productivity in Pennisetum, Sorghum, maize, chickpea, and pigeonpea. During these years at IARI, he has released nine varieties of early pigeonpea in arhar-wheat rotation. Dr. Govil has been well exposed to the international scientific community through various programmes at UK, Denmark and Thailand. He also participated in various international seminars and conferences. Dr. Govil is credited with more than ninety research papers in various journals of national and international repute in various aspects of genetics, crop breeding, and topics on general agriculture. He has also guided more than a dozen post-graduate students. Dr. Govil is recipient of no. of Awards and Honor presented by ICAR and Agricultural Societies. He has written and edited a number of books on Medicinal Plants and other books with international authors. A new series “Recent Progress in Medicinal Plants” has been published by Studium Press, LLC, USA in 44 volumes under Dr. Govil’s Chief Editorship. Dr. Govil has been the main resource person as Executive Editor in Execution, Co-ordination and Completion of Projects in bringing 12 Vols Set each on Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Energy Science and Technology, and Environmental Science and Engineering. Simultaneously, Dr. Govil has brought four volumes set of Chemical Technology Series comprising 2 vols each on Advances in Fertilizer Technology as well as on Petroleum Engineering under the capacity of Acquisition Editor of the Series. <span>Manohar Pathak A Post graduate in Botany with specialization in Plant Biotechnology from CCS University, Meerut in 2010 having 4 years of experience in publication of books and research articles. Have deep interest in Medicinal Plants and its chemistry, pharmacology, post harvest technology, phyto-techniques and scientometric studies. Previously Worked at CSIR-NISCAIR, New Delhi for approx-imately two years and was associated with Indian Journal for Natural products and resources. Have authored four books of secondary standard, three conference proceedings and couple of reseach article in a reputed journal. Currently Working in Food Corporation of India at FSD, Bathinda, Punjab.</span>
