Beschreibungen

Biomaterials are natural or synthetic materials that are intended to interact with biological systems to evaluate, treat, augment, or replace any tissue, organ or function of the body. A biomaterial substrate composed of nanometer-scale components is known as nano-biomaterial. Nano-biomaterials have an increased number of atoms at their surface and possess a higher surface area to volume ratio than conventional micro-scale biomaterials. Biomaterials are increasingly being used for medical applications like joint replacements, bone plates, bone cement, artificial ligaments and tendons, dental implants for tooth fixation, heart valves, artificial tissues, bioimaging and biosensing. The volume 11 is intended to serve as a reference book for students, teachers, researchers as well as professionals who are willing to acquire detailed understanding of the otherwise wide area of biomaterials for their potential biomedical applications. To meet the above objectives this volume covers following topics: Introduction of nano-biomaterials; Experimental techniques for synthesis of bio-nano materials and their applications in catalysis and sensing; Synthesis of fully interconnected macrospore forming calcium phosphate cement (FMF-CPC) for artificial bone substitution; Biomedical applications of C60 buckeye balls, iron oxide nano particles, carbon nano tubes, quantum dots, gold nano particles, nano BaSO4, dendrites and ceramics; Properties and applications of lipids, proteins and polysaccharides for drug delivery systems; Effect of sport and energy drinks on dental restorative materials; Stimulus-responsive nano materials for targeted drug delivery; Host tissue response to implanted biomaterial; Chatoyant based nano particles - preparation methods and their biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. This volume contains 19 chapters from 63 researchers and/or academicians representing 15 countries, namely Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, India, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, United States and Vietnam presenting an overview of the research being carried out in different parts of the world on biomaterials.
Dr. Naveen Kumar Navani, received his Masters degree (1993) in Animal Biotechnology from National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal in India. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Protein Engineering from Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh, India. He served as a scientist in DNA Fingerpriting unit of an institute of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in India. He then pursued his post-doctoral research with Professor Yingfu Li at McMaster University, Canada from 2003-2007, in the field of nucleic acid engineering and Nano Biotechnology. In 2007, he joined Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Roorkee, India where he is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biotechnology. He is actively associated with Centre for Nanotechnology of IIT also. His work has been published in reputed journals like Chembiochem, NucleicAcid Research, Current Opinion in Chemical Biology and Methods in Molecular Biology. He has also written book chapters on development of Aptamer based biosensors for detection of pathogens, proteins and small molecules. His current research interests include biosensor development using chemical biology and nanobiotechnology; especially developing antibacterial packaging for extending shelf life of perishable products, developing whole cell and nanosensors for pathogen detection and removal of toxins, xenobiotics and bacteria using nanotechnology. His research is funded by Department of Biotechnology; Government of India, Indian Council of Agricultural Research through National Agricultural Innovation Project, State Biotechnology Board and Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Govt of India.
